Bucket List: Aurora Borealis

9:18 pm – Just as the first set of lights began to dance over Chena Lake and the ice fishing huts

What a magical night! For as long as I can remember, my number one bucket list item was to see the Aurora Borealis and it happened in the best, most beautiful display! Less than 48 hours after arriving in Fairbanks, Alaska (and a day earlier than planned), we arrived at Chena Lake boat ramp at 8:50pm and they had already begun. Smooth, dancing, fog-like lights with shades of white, green, purple, magenta, and red flowed through the sky. There was what seemed like a creature gliding its way across the sky. It skated along the lights with its unique glow brightening every section it touched. The “dancing” lights put on the most stunning show I’ve ever seen multiple times over the course of our four hour stay. I cried, I screeched in excitement, I jumped up and down on top of the frozen lake! This makes every risk, every moment of doubt, every mistake that brought us here totally worth it! This far exceeded my expectations! This night, staring towards the sky at Mother Nature’s beauty, reassures me that we are EXACTLY where we should be right now. -Natalie
